Here in Southern Arizona, we can rely on a single event to warn us that a new season is approaching – spring training baseball! Welcoming the Cactus League is our region’s version of a ‘time zone change’…a 1pm first-pitch begins the day, 1:15 becomes the new happy hour, and a couple of days in the middle of the week declare our adjusted work weekend. It’s also that season when the nutritional necessity of hotdogs and beer is supported by 30 national organizations – fifteen of them ‘American.’

But Lacey and her gluten and dairy free counterparts find it difficult to enjoy the hype. Although the list of options is ever-growing, GF alcohol alternatives typically steer toward the sweeter side. And between holiday cocktails and cider selections – Lacey anxiously awaits the next pitch.

If I had it my way, every spring training complex would sign with Suede for a pop-up-bar to manage a team of gluten intolerant day-drinkers. First cocktail on the schedule?…Mary Melon-tini.

Ingredient line-up:

Tito’s Handmade Vodka

Honeydew

Cucumber

Rosemary

Squeeze of lemon

Pinch of Tajin fruit seasoning

Splash of soda

TOAST…To the smell of freshly groomed grass and a ‘cold one.’
